Major Ramaswamy Parameshwaran, a revered officer of the Indian Army, is celebrated for his unwavering bravery and supreme sacrifice during India’s peacekeeping mission in Sri Lanka. Early Life and Military Career

Major Ramaswamy Parameshwaran was born on September 13, 1946, in Bombay (now Mumbai). After completing his education, he joined the Indian Army through the Officers Training Academy in Chennai. He was commissioned into the 15th Battalion of the Mahar Regiment, where he displayed outstanding leadership and tactical skills.

Operation Pawan and the Sri Lanka Mission

Major Parameshwaran played a pivotal role during Operation Pawan, the Indian Peace Keeping Force (IPKF) mission in Sri Lanka aimed at disarming the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE). On November 25, 1987, while returning from a search operation in Jaffna, he and his team were ambushed by militants. Demonstrating exceptional courage and quick thinking, he led a counterattack with limited resources, inspiring his troops to fight valiantly.

Despite being gravely injured, Major Parameshwaran personally killed five militants and neutralized the ambush. His heroic actions saved many lives and turned the tide of the encounter in favor of the Indian forces. Tragically, he succumbed to his injuries on the battlefield.

Recognition and Legacy

In recognition of his unmatched valor, Major Ramaswamy Parameshwaran was awarded the Param Vir Chakra posthumously. His official citation highlights his "conspicuous bravery, indomitable spirit, and supreme sacrifice."

Major Parameshwaran’s legacy continues to inspire generations of soldiers and civilians alike. Memorials and institutions, such as the Param Vir Chakra Gallery at the National War Memorial in New Delhi, stand as a testament to his sacrifice.
