Known for his unwavering courage and indomitable spirit, he sacrificed his life during the Battle of Tithwal in the Indo-Pakistan War of 1947-48. His heroic actions earned him the Param Vir Chakra, India’s highest wartime gallantry award, posthumously.
The Battle of Tithwal: A One-Man Army Against the Enemy
During the Indo-Pak War of 1947-48, Pakistani forces launched a counter-offensive in the Tithwal sector, forcing Indian troops to retreat across the Kishanganga River.
To regain lost ground, the 6 Rajputana Rifles was moved to Tithwal to strengthen 163 Brigade in its offensive operations. The Indian assault began on July 11, 1948, making steady gains until July 15, when it was discovered that two key enemy-held hill features needed to be captured for further progress.
On July 18, 1948, D Company of the 6 Rajputana Rifles was assigned to capture the first feature, while C Company would move forward after their success.
CHM Piru Singh, leading D Company, advanced along a narrow one-meter-wide path, heavily targeted by enemy machine guns and mortar fire. Within 30 minutes, 51 Indian soldiers fell to enemy fire. Undeterred, CHM Piru Singh charged alone towards the enemy bunker, bayoneting the crew and silencing the deadly machine gun, despite suffering multiple grenade wounds.
Bleeding profusely, he continued his assault, taking out another enemy machine gun post with grenades and a bayonet attack.
His ammunition exhausted, he crawled forward and launched a final charge at the third enemy bunker. Just as he was about to eliminate the enemy, he was fatally shot in the head, but his grenade exploded inside the bunker, ensuring mission success. His self-sacrificing heroism turned the tide of battle, securing victory for India at Tithwal.
Legacy and the Param Vir Chakra Award
For his extraordinary bravery, supreme sacrifice, and indomitable spirit, CHM Piru Singh was posthumously awarded the Param Vir Chakra. His unparalleled courage remains one of the most inspiring stories in Indian military history. His mother, Mrs. Tarawati, received a letter from Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, recognizing the nation’s gratitude for her son’s sacrifice. Today, his legacy continues to inspire generations of soldiers and patriots.
