Major Shaitan Singh: The Hero of Rezang La
Introduction
Major Shaitan Singh, an embodiment of bravery and sacrifice, played a pivotal role in the Indo-China War of 1962. Commissioned into the Kumaon Regiment on August 1, 1949, he led his men with unmatched courage in the Battle of Rezang La, an engagement that remains one of the most heroic last stands in military history. His unwavering dedication to duty earned him the Param Vir Chakra, India’s highest wartime gallantry award, posthumously.
The Battle of Rezang La (November 18, 1962)
During the Sino-Indian War, the 13 Kumaon Regiment was deployed in the Chushul sector, a strategically crucial area. Charlie Company (C Coy), led by Major Shaitan Singh, was positioned at Rezang La, at an altitude of 5000 meters.
The terrain was harsh, and the company was isolated from the rest of the battalion, making it a prime target for the Chinese forces.
On the morning of November 18, 1962, the Chinese Army launched a massive attack. The cold, biting winds of Rezang La added to the challenges as 350-400 enemy soldiers advanced through nullahs (gullies), attempting to breach the Indian defenses.
Fierce Resistance by Indian Soldiers
Despite being vastly outnumbered, the Kumaonis fought with unmatched determination.
At 0500 hours, as visibility improved, Indian soldiers opened fire with rifles, light machine guns, grenades, and mortars, inflicting heavy casualties on the enemy.
The nullahs were soon filled with enemy bodies, forcing the survivors to take cover behind boulders and the dead.
Undeterred, the Chinese forces launched multiple waves of attacks, supported by artillery and mortar fire.No.9 Platoon, holding fire until the enemy was just 90 meters away, unleashed a devastating counterattack, once again repelling the assault.
The Chinese Change Strategy
Having failed in their frontal assaults, the enemy attempted to attack from the rear. A 120-strong assault group targeted No.7 Platoon, while another force of 400 men advanced on No.8 Platoon.
Despite being surrounded, the Indian soldiers continued to fight.A few Kumaonis, out of ammunition, charged into hand-to-hand combat, taking down several enemy soldiers before falling. No 7 and No.8 Platoons fought till the last man, last bullet, refusing to retreat.
Major Shaitan Singh’s Supreme Sacrifice
Major Shaitan Singh displayed extraordinary leadership throughout the battle. He moved from one platoon to another, encouraging his men to hold their ground. While coordinating the defense, he was severely wounded by enemy fire.
Two comrades attempted to evacuate him, but Chinese machine-gun fire intensified, making their movement dangerous.Understanding the risk to his men, Major Shaitan Singh ordered them to leave him behind. They placed him behind a boulder, where he breathed his last, still defending his post.
After the war, his body was found at the same location, frozen in the same position. He was flown to Jodhpur and cremated with full military honors.
Legacy & Recognition
The Battle of Rezang La was one of the fiercest battles of the Indo-China War. Out of 123 soldiers of C Company, 109 were martyred, but they inflicted massive casualties on the Chinese forces.
